Toni & Guy – Eastbourne
Client: Franchisee, Stacey Lovick
The manageress of Eastbourne’s Toni & Guy, Stacey, approached Sarra with a refurbishment concept she had for her high street salon. She needed more space for her thriving business to have more hairdressers to cope with demand. There were no drawings but she knew what she wanted.
The franchise of TONI&GUY Eastbourne was acquired by Stacey Lovick in 2014. She took over a thriving client base, but inherited severe spatial limitations and an ageing interior scheme. Both had negative impact on the appearance of the hair salon and her drive to build the business.
TONI&GUY is a globally renowned and trusted brand that combines British precision with Italian flair. A successful franchise operation, it has more than 400 salons globally.
Each one operates autonomously and can develop its own distinctive salon style, but within clear guidelines that reflect the distinctive TONI&GUY brand image – a stylish mix of white, grey and black, with the iconic logo font.
Having worked in the salon for 10 years, the franchisee had clear ideas of how the disjointed 68m2 area could be re-configured to operate more effectively – for the benefit of both clients and her team.
In spring 2017, she contacted Hawes Building Limited with her concepts for a refurbishment programme that would transform the space both visually and ergonomically.
Our proven ability to advise her on design development and implementation – and to deliver dedicated project management alongside a precision team of specialist contractors – won us her confidence and this contract.
Our project management involved close collaboration with the franchisee, plus her stylists and technicians, over the preliminary three-month planning cycle. We advised on how Hawes Building could augment and then implement her ‘new look’ re-design concept.
Our detailed preparation involved introducing sub-contractors who proposed components and materials that would further enhance those plans. A specialist lighting company was commissioned to survey the existing salon – currently dark and unwelcoming – so that suitable lighting could be installed to enable the staff to work safely and productively, and clients to enjoy being in this stylish space.
Every element had to be agreed and in place before our team went on site. That way we ensured that we could deliver within the strict nine-day installation period over which the salon was to close. We also had to factor in correcting any unforeseen problems that might be revealed when old walls were opened up and furniture removed.
The existing reception area shielded a large section of the salon and made it very dark. It also took up the space of four or five styling chairs and – since the franchisee’s main goal was to increase the through-put of clients and improve their salon experience – it had to go.
In its place, and incorporating the salon’s impractical central section, we created an open area that almost doubles the usable space and is visually enlarged by a wall of mirrors, with floating shelves that carry hairdryer sockets, plus electrical and mobile charging points. The newly constructed reception desk and wardrobe – all in the TONI&GUY brand colours – were positioned centrally, to further enhance the chic and inclusive environment.
Sarra Hawes project managed throughout the process, which she describes as ‘like fitting pieces of a jigsaw’ – all within the allotted nine days. Finally, decorators moved in to refresh the entire space. With this immaculately refurbished salon – which was completed on time and budget and exceeded the franchisee’s expectations – we have given the stylists and technicians a working environment that they feel proud of.
“TONI&GUY Eastbourne is dedicated to providing our clients with the ultimate on-brand salon experience,” says Stacey Lovick. “Sarra Hawes and her team have helped us to achieve that goal by creating this stylish, contemporary interior scheme.”
