Youth Centre – 39a Grove Hill Road – Tunbridge Wells
We were commissioned by Kent County Council to convert this existing building (previously used as a family support centre) which was old fashioned, dark and dreary into a cheery, welcoming facility for young adults to feel comfortable and at home in.
The job consisted of stripping out some internal partition walls on the ground floor to open up a large area, which was to be used as an activity room with a mirrored wall one side and computers in another section. This area will be used for for yoga, dance, relaxation and other similar activities.
We formed a large structural opening between the kitchen/lounge areas to make a lovely social space with a counter area to serve refreshments. Computers were also installed in this area – an essential part of teenage life these days!
In addition to the structural alterations, we formed a suspended ceiling in the activity room which again lightened the whole room and gave it a much more modern feel.
We decorated throughout the building and whilst doing so we discovered a major leak coming in from the chimney and flat roof area. We were asked by Kent County Council to hack off and re render the chimney and to completely reform the valley roof and cover with lead.
Both operations were carried out smoothly and they looked totally transformed once finished, although much of it can’t be seen from the ground!
