Bruce Hawes ACIOB – Managing Director
Bruce started his career in the industry working as a labourer during school holidays which lead him to become a bricklaying apprentice with a local company. At the same time, Bruce went to college to do his City & Guilds in bricklaying, obtaining distinctions in all his exams. This spurred him on to do his HNC where he won two top awards – The William Pankhurst Cup and The Craftsman’s Cup. Bruce then joined Llewellyn’s as a Management Trainee and progressed through the company to become a Contracts Manager at their Brighton office.
Bruce left Llewellyn’s after serving 13 years, just after they were bought out by Rok, and joined a deconstruction and diamond drilling company which became very successful. He then decided to fulfil a lifelong dream and set up his own construction company with his wife Sarra.
Sarra Hawes – Company Director
Sarra loved technical drawing at school and thought about becoming an architect’s technician until she went for an interview at Hastings College and was persuaded to do a general building course. She studied for an OND for two years full time and then applied to Llewellyn’s as a Management Trainee. Whilst at Llewellyn’s, Sarra went back to college to get a HNC in Building Studies. Sarra spent two years shadowing every department within the company, from wages and buying to plant and timber frame, to get a complete overview of the building industry before finally settling on site management and becoming Llewellyn’s first ever female site manager.
Sarra left after serving 15 years with Llewellyn’s, just before her husband, and worked for another local building company before joining Bruce to set up Hawes Building Ltd.
Faye Warren – Office Administrator
Married with five children Faye began her working career later in life as she decided to raise a family first. She has many years’ experience within office administration roles which included two prominent taxi companies in Eastbourne.
Faye joined Hawes Building in 2016 and helps Sarra with the financial side of the company, the running of the busy office and setting new administrative systems to ensure the smooth operation of the business. Faye has now embarked on her accountancy qualifications to polish of her skills.
Nicky Babaoglu – Office Administrator
Nicky has recently joined the Hawes team, and is now working alongside Faye whilst learning all aspects of the building industry, after moving back to the UK from Turkey in 2012 where she worked, settled down, married and had two daughters.
She has comprehensive office management skills from her earlier days as a supervisor with Eastbourne Water and then office manager for a tour operator in Marmaris, Turkey. Nicky then worked in a medical clinic translating and dealing with insurance companies. Since being back in the UK, Nicky has worked as a teaching assistant at Motcombe Infant School.
Nick Newton – Contracts Manager
Nick joined the team in August 2017 as a contracts manager to specialise in dry lining/fit out. Nick is married to Liane and has two grown up children. He has worked in the construction industry from the age of 20, starting out as a trainee ceiling fixer and partition installer. He then progressed to running a small subcontracting partnership, carrying out office refurbishments.
Nick then became a site manager working for a large fit out company, running bigger contracts in and around London. In 2002, Nick was offered a role as a contracts manager for a local interiors company, working throughout the South East for 12 years. Nick has a good knowledge of suspended ceilings, plastering, dry lining and all other associated trades within the fit out sector.
Nick enjoys cycling, golf, fishing, walking his dogs in the great outdoors, watching movies and listening to good music.
Mark Chandler – Contracts Manager
Mark started his career in banking and progressed through to Assistant Manager of a local branch. During his time there he developed a deep understanding of customer services and how to engage with people on all levels.
Having decided on a career change more in keeping with the family history, he switched to working for a construction company and spent an enjoyable two years learning the basic skills required. He then took these skills onto a facilities management company specialising in social housing. Whilst Mark was initially employed as a tradesman, his people skills and knowledge were soon noticed and he ran a successful team installing on various kitchen and bathroom programmes both supervising work and acting as a resident liaison officer.
Having learnt his trade, Contracts Manager was the next logical step. Over the past few years he has run multiple installation projects and void refurbishments for a variety of clients across the south-east and achieved every key performance target set. New clients have been gained regularly and has recently completed various external decorating contracts as well as more general maintenance projects.
Mark enjoys his fitness and regularly goes to the gym. This year he successfully completed a Tough Mudder in Crawley and has booked to do another next year!!
Cameron Clarke – Management Trainee
Cameron started his career within construction in early 2018 at the age of 20, as a Junior estimator learning the pre-construction/tendering stages. Then deciding his interest was a lot more focused on the construction phase and managing within the industry. Cameron joined Hawes in late July 2018 as a Management Trainee, looking to progress his career with Hawes in Site management, alongside studying a part time 2-year HNC Construction course.
Before working in the construction industry Cameron worked full time within the motorsport industry (go karting) with his father. Racing in the British and European championships and succeeding in many. Now works weekends alongside his full-time job teaching all ages to race competitively and acting as mechanic for the karts too.
Hobbies/interests- Motorsport, gym, running, mountain biking, MMA.
Keith Robertson – Surveyor
Born in Jamaica in 1964, moving to Greater London with his family aged 7, Keith started his 34 year construction industry career as a construction management trainee experiencing and learning the aspects of contracts management, site management and quantity surveying, eventually choosing to pursue the latter and completing qualifications along the way.
